“The issues that politicians and negotiators are dealing with are about our future. and if they are making decisions about us, then not without us”

The experience in CBD COP 10-Nagoya, for me, was worthwhile moment of a lifetime. This was the time where world youth can speak on behalf of their generation to come, urging the world governments to save the nature and protect the species. That was also an amazing occurrence where I delivered 3 minutes Biodiversity speech in “Stakeholders panelist session” -High Level Segment (HLS), in front of 192 government delegations and varied observers.

That was October 28th. There held the official panelist session in COP 10 that involved 8 diverse stakeholders (Parliamentarians [UK], Local govt., Business, Donor, NGOs, Indigenous, Woman, and Youth) to discuss their stances on the pivotal area of biodiversity issue. This is a vast opportunity for youth to speak up and have their idea about their future are being heard by government and all stakeholders. Together along with other youths attending, we tried to lobby our governments to demand highly strong commitment and political will to save the biodiversity loss by 2020. We speak up in forum on behalf of the world youth to let them know that many youth all over the world have capabilities to make a change and save the nature on our own way. Henceforth, as it talks about our future, we demand our involvement in the CBD process for the upcoming time.
So there it goes… My 3 minutes speech sufficiently depicted the current urgency of preserving nature and how important youth should be acknowledged to engage in the negotiation process.
http://webcast.cop10.go.jp/player.asp?id=2803&type=ondemand (skip to minute 36)

CBD COP 10 in Japan mainly aims to three aspect of biodiversity: Conserve biodiversity, use natural resources sustainably, and share Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism. After all complexities of multilateral negotiation from 18-28 Octobers, We should be thankful that delegates of the conference agreed to committed legally binding achiaevemets namely Aichi Target and Nagoya Protocol. For this, Japan has already promised US$2 billion to help achieve the Nagoya targets, with smaller sums pledged by other CBD signatories, including France, Norway and the European Union
This brief story of my experience had shown how complex the international negotiations were that it required engaging all stakeholders in every single aspect of life. When talking about the issue of biodiversity and natural resources, it means talking about our future. Throughout the GYBO (Global Youth Biodiversity Organisasion) that had been newly established, the youth succeeded to lobby and convince CBD secretariat to recognize our engagement in the upcoming process of CBD negotiations. Why? Because youth is outsider that can intervene the negotiation with our direct channel regardless political and economical will. We have to participatively take part in decision-making upon our own future.

(With minister of environment Indonesia)

Is that all?

On October 27th, we six had presentation on the outcomes of IYCB 2010 in ministry interactive Biodiversity Forum. There comes many participant esp. from the local students. In this occasion, I presented to audience the initiation on creating the global youth organisation named GYBO to talk and take action related to biodiversity matters among youth all over the world.

This opportunity was a very great experience. At the end of the journey, we were also hosted by a Japanese family for 2 days and a night. This was indeed a pathway to enjoy the time with mesmerizing views, culture and people of Japan.

How do I get there?

This story begun In 2009, when I firstly joined Asian level conference on Biodiversity. My participation in AYCB is due to the selected essay and biodiversity project submission via online platform. Afterwhile, I was selected again to represent AYCB participant to the international level (IYCB) 2010 that was attended by youth from 70 countries with economic, environmental, international relations and diverse background of study or work. Around 3 weeks later, I received an official invitation from the ministry of Japan to represent IYCB participant together along with 5 other fellows from each continent (Egypt, United Kingdom, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia and Germany). Finally, in a discussion I was again chosen to represent world youth to deliver speech about youth and biodiversity (here: script). It’s an honor for us to represent the youth to be the official observer of HLS in CBD COP 10. We know, learn, share one another! Saving biodiversity is saving our future life.

Day 1 [7 Desember 2008]

Airport yang Hi-tech, so clean, so lux, so cool, layaknya mall. Setiba di sana, dengan papan bertuliskan SYC indonesia delegation, teman-teman peserta Singapore beserta komite menjemput kami untuk segera menuju ke hotel RELC international, tempat penginapan selama kegiatan berlangsung.

Perjalanan menuju hotel menjadi first impression yang cukup mengagumkan.

Day 2 [8 Desember 2008]

Day 3 [9 Desember 2008]

lastly, go to the room, charging energy aftera whole tiring day to welcome the next day!

Day 4 [10 Desember 2008]

What a memorable experience!

Day 5 [11 Desember 2008]

Pukul 10 pagi, piknik @ Hort Park. Picnic Time!

Day 6 [12 Desember 2008]

Day 7 [13 Desember 2008]

The last day was the hardest part for us! kami harus berpamitan satu sama lain dengan seluruh peserta dari delegasi negara yang ada, dengan roommate, SYC Ace, Chaperone negara lain dan para panitia.

•	Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.

Hello, my name is Niwa, and I am from Indonesia. I have been given this chance to speak on behalf of my generation.
We know that the world is fast approaching a tipping point; we know that biodiversity loss continues at a critical rate; we know that international targets have been set and missed.
These are the facts!

We believe in a vision of the world in 2050. A world in which we have ended the human causes of biodiversity loss; in which we have brought the rate of biodiversity loss close to zero; and in which we have rehabilitated ecosystems.
We believe in this vision, and we believe that it is important, today. For us, this vision is relevant, urgent, and real. The world today is the world we inherit; the world in 2050 is the world we will shape; it is the legacy that we will leave for our children.

We believe that we can achieve this vision, but today we need your help.
There are challenges to achieving this vision. Our world in 2050 will be home to billions more people; it will have to provide food, water, and energy for all of them.
Decisions made here, today, by you, can help us overcome these challenges.

What will it take?
We must engage youth as a stakeholder. We have the initiative, the enthusiasm, and the resourcefulness to accomplish real change.
At the International Youth Conference here in August, I saw this capacity for change. I met young people from across the world: campaigning for protected areas in South America; alternative livelihoods in Africa; or marine and coastal ecosystems in Southeast Asia.
People often talk about the need to educate young people about conservation. The people I met here in Nagoya don’t need to be educated, they need to be empowered.
What we need is a platform.
We are creating a world-wide youth network committed to combining our strengths and our ideas: the Global Youth Biodiversity Organisation, or GYBO.
Now we need a permanent youth representative within the CBD Secretariat.

Young people learn by example.
What examples are we being set?

We are learning that international targets don’t need to be met.
That funding commitments don’t need to be kept.
That responsibilities do not need to be shared.
And that international conferences can frustrate, rather than inspire.

In 1992, Severn Cullins-Suzuki spoke at the Rio Summit:
In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.
Today, 18 years later, this fear is closer to being reality, not further away.
Why? The promise of Rio was not fulfilled.

Nagoya must be different.
Today, you can set ambitious targets for reducing the rate of biodiversity loss. Tomorrow, you can go out and start meeting them.
You can show the world that international cooperation can be a force for change, rather than just a buzzword. Ratifying a fair, enforceable, and legally-binding protocol on ABS would be a powerful way of showing this.
And you can set the stage for Rio +20, when the world will face a moment to alter the course of life on our planet.

Today, you have the chance to set a truly inspiring example for change.
Don’t disappoint us.

How one defines international systems is thus about how one defines international relations as a discipline. Based on Buzan and Little journal and comparative books, reviewer, hereby, will try to explain definition of international system in IRs and elaborate the distinctive difference throughout the analytical lens (approach) of Realist and Neorealist. At the end, the reviewer concludes that characteristics and interactions of behavioral units (internal factors) are considered as the direct cause of political events by realist while neorealist argued that systemic constraints of each country (external factor) rather than their internal composition.

Bull and Watson’s formulated that Int. system is “a group of independent political communities forming a system, in the sense that the behaviour of each is a necessary factor in the calculations of others.” There is also the more formal definition by Waltz that the international system comprises units (states), interactions and structur. These authors implied that states must be in sufficiently close and intense contact and an international system does not come into being until quite high levels of (strategic) interaction exist.

In fact, the historical record suggests that international systems range from very small, through regional and inter-regional to global in scale. During the ancient and classical era, it is easy to find examples of international systems on a quite small scale. During the first half of the third millennium BC, Sumerian civilization was organized as a system of city-states. This is recognizably an international system, having independent units, diplomacy, war and trade. Later in nineteenth and twentieth century, one finds larger regional international systems.

According to Buzan and Little, The historical record suggests that four types of interaction are significant for any broadly conceived understanding of international relations: military, political, economic and cultural . Since the idea of system is an analytical concept, one has the right to set the criteria for it in an arbitrary manner. The point is that these choices have consequences for how we understand and interpret the historical record. If the criteria for defining international systems are set in a tight and restrictive way (military/ political interaction), then we will see fewer such systems. If the criteria are more open and less restrictive, we will see more international systems and find them earlier.

Waltz’s (1979) understanding of political structure suggests that international systems always have structure. For Waltz, “a system is composed of a structure and of interacting parts.” He divides political structure into three tiers: the organizing principle (anarchy), the functional differentiation of units (units alike in terms of functionality), and the distribution of capabilities (how many great powers are in the system) .

The distinctive difference of international relations analysis will be explained through comparing Morgenthau and Waltz’s arguments. Classical Realists (Morgenthau) analyze that international systems are caused by factors focusing on action and interaction of units—principle of human nature, the idea of interest are defined in terms of power, the attitude of statesmen, rather than highlighting the systemic constraints of international politics. Power is rooted from human and statesmen . The Behavioral methodology of realists explains the political impact by assessing the main parts of the political system. In other words, the characteristics and interactions of behavioral units (internal factors) are considered as the direct cause of political events.

Neo-realists (Waltz) Denied the statement of classical realist that it is possible to predict the condition of international politics by assessing the country’s internal composition. Waltz opposed with a question: Why is the country’s foreign policy showed the same attitudes despite different political systems and ideological conflict (i.e. US and USSR: Their Deeds and policy along Cold War are similar)?

Realist can not handle the cause at stage of the above countries: ignoring the important impact of the structure as the forces that shape and encourage units within the international system. The answer to this question can further be found in the systemic constraints of each country (external factor: above countries) rather than their internal composition, because this systematic force equate foreign policy stance by placing themselves between the countries and their diplomatic stance (the largest contribution of neo-realism to the traditional theory). This is based on the power coming from the international anarchist who became systematically from a state requirement. The theory postulates that the driving force behind decisions in international relations is the fact that states are trying to respond to changes in international systems in order to survive.

The year of 2010 had been declared as the international year of biodiversity by the United Nation General Assembly 61th session. Coinciding with celebration of World Environment Day , there are many events taking place in the world regarding the celebration of Biodiversity year. Some of many are World Environment Day in Rwanda 5th June, and COP-CBD10 held in Nagoya city, Japan, environmental conferences and so forth. Before determining your pace, we have to figure out the question: “Why do people need to do this? What for and how significant as a global issue?” Thus In my opinion there are 3 major significances of biodiversity and environment as an issue.

Firstly, Biodiversity (BD) is ife and is our life. It brings enormous benefits to mankind from direct goods as harvesting of plants and animals for food, cloth, medicine, fuel, construction materials, and other uses that give you need to live. Those needs are coming from nothing except the nature of Biodiversity. It’s fundamental to the existence of life on Earth. However humans have been the main cause of recent rapid destruction. Ecosystems are being destroyed, animals and plants becoming extinct, and biodiversity is being lost due to increased human activities that ignore the sustainability of biodiversity.

Secondly, Biodiversity clearly plays a major role in the function of ecosystems, and the chain of lif (indirect value of BD). For instance, biodiversity helps keep fresh air to breathe, water clean and naturally manages waterflow and watershed. Excessive exploitation such as deforestation has negatively affected the entire ecosystem itself, and some scientists fear that these could eventually affect humans. We need Ability to not only understand the problems we have created and what needs to be done to amend them, but also the capability of accomplishing these tasks.

Last but not least, Biological Diversity gives the recreational benefits for everyone. Hiking, camping, and birding. In addition, ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular, which has not only raised awareness about biodiversity, but also helps the natural environment economically as well. The beauty and the value of it have complemented the side of how important it is. Aside from that BD also have research values within its richness~ the source of science and technology.

In short, biodiversity is a fundamental component of life on Earth and thus must be protected. we all “need” and “want” biodiversity . We can eventually live entirely with nature, not harm the very system that allows us to exist. This is also about the interdependence of all these living things, including humans. intrinsic theory is that people did not create nature, and therefore should not have the right to destroy it. Every species has a right to not be eliminated by humans of this lies in goods obtained from nature. Thus Conservation and sustainable use of Biodiversity are tangible ways of tackling down problems that exist. A mass media, like Treeehugger will efeciently work to drive informations among people. Promoting values n order ot achieve MDGs 7

Start from yourself, begin with a small thing, and start it RIGHT NOW!!!

Now, we steadily understand why environment and its biodiversity are prominently significant to life. The only thing I can say is to make yourself aware of this issue and spread the words. Apply your awareness in every routine activity you are doing. That’s all thing that matter!!
And we (all) will live in a world paradise….^_^

“I wonder… if people on earth were actively engaged in creating good environment, and thought of themselves as agent of change, problem solvers, role models, and key “stakeholders”…how would the planet change?”

What Will you do??

CONFERENCE OF ASIAN YOUTH ON BIODIVERSITY
,Nagoya,Japan 2009

The Ministry for the Environment Japan hold the Asian Biodiversity Conference for Youth, age 16 until 24 Japan from 2nd August to 6th, Hosted by the Ministry of Environment Japan and Japan Youth Ecology League.
Thirty International delegates of environmentalist from 13 different countries across Asia and around fifty delegates from Japan had participated to discuss various problems related to biodiversity loss and to formulate a strong youth opinion.
The conference comprised various input sessions, discussions, workshops, a small excursion and a cultural exchange program. The four day conference went on smoothly and the participants actively discussed, debated and worked together on common biodiversity related issues such as the post millennium target, access to Genetic Resources and benefit-sharing, Climate change and biodiversity, Increasing monoculture, Forest management, Invasive alien species , ecotourism and indifference of United States towards CBD.
The entire conference revolved around formulation of a bold Youth Statement that will be presented before the CBD COP 10 TO BE HELD at Nagoya next Year in the month of October.
Strong action plans were adopted by the young enthusiastic members which will be implemented in their respective countries.
Another significant outcome was the initiation of Asia youth biodiversity network that will perpetuate the strong network that has been created through this conference.
